discover your poetic possibilities
Today’s interview is with writer Jessica Brooke Miller. Welcome!
How long have you been writing?
I wrote different things all through school, including prose for a creative writing course I took in Italy, but I had never written a poem until my uncle died when I was a senior in high school. His spirit passed through my body while I cried and prayed for him. He gave me his gift that night.
That’s a way to learn the craft I hadn’t heard before! Do you write only poetry now or other genres as well?
I am starting to branch out to short stories.
Which is your favorite poem from one of your books? Can you tell us a little about how that particular poem came to be?
My favorite poem is “The Other Side” which appears in the book of the same name. It was written while I was in the psychiatric ward in 2007 and it is about how the nurses and staff do not understand or empathize about our illnesses. Mental illness is still stigmatized and that needs to stop.
As tragic as the suicide of Robin Williams was, I think it helped start a much-needed conversation about this issue. I do hope you are an advocate for yourself and other patients. It’s brave of you to speak up, Jessica.
What is the hardest part about writing for you?
When I get writer’s block and can’t get my emotions out.
What do you like best about writing poetry?
It is cleansing and healing to me. It is my main coping skill.
Share one surprising fact about Jessica Brooke.
I fell in with an alligator in the Everglades when I was around five or so. I stared into its yellow eyes but it didn’t eat me.
Wow…what an experience!
Anything you’d like to add?
I have to thank my family for being so supportive and the online community as well.
Thanks so much, Jessica! Where can people find your books?
They are both on Amazon:
